EQUINE INFLUENZA SUPPORT PLAN

This support programme is best commenced prior to the virus reaching your locality. This usually means commencing when it is about 50kms from your horse(s).

  1. Commence PRO-FORM & PRO-MUNE as directed on the label. Over 5 days reduce the hard feed in the diet.

  2. Twice daily add 4 cloves of fresh minced garlic in 250mls of cider vinegar with the mother bug included (has a cloudy appearance and is not available in supermarkets but is in most produce shops). Use to dampen morning and night feeds.

  3. Also add 150mls of virgin coconut oil to morning feed and again in the night feed.
  4. Increase the bulk content using lucerne hay and chaff and wheaten chaff, also mixed grasses if available.

  5. Include 1 cup of uncooked brown rice in the morning and night feed. If the horse doesn't have the availability of pick include include some low heating pellets with less than 15% protein.

  6. It is beneficial to have a blood analysis done prior to commencing the programme and another about 1 month later.

  7. Monitor temperatures twice daily. If the temperature rises over 39.5deg. your vet may suggest a dose of Bute to help lower the temperature. Vets we have been in contact with have said that antibiotics don't seem to help much at all with the virus itself.

  8. The total duration of this support programme is usually 21 days. However some horses may experience mucous elimination for longer. These horses need to stay on PRO-FORM until their nose, eyes & cough have cleared.

Please contact us by phone or e-mail if you have any queries regarding this support plan.
